On July 4, together with Marie Claire, we organized a conference at EDEM Escuela de Empresarios, in Valencia, in which we discussed women and motherhood in the 21st century. A topic that interests, and a lot, judging by the attendance. Below we leave you a summary in images of the day 😉
For this, we have some high-level participants:
- Prof. José Remohí, president and co-founder of IVI;
- María Pardo, director of the magazine Marie Claire;
- Hortensia Roig, president of EDEM School of Entrepreneurs and member of Mercadona’s board of directors;
- Inma Soria “@Coohuco”, Influencer in her thirties who has not yet considered being a mother; and
- Irene Zabala, patient who has preserved her fertility at IVI Valencia.
And it is that, if something is clear, it is that women and motherhood today are not what they were. The birth rate has dropped, women no longer “wait” to have a partner to become mothers, many want to travel, train, work, explore, discover themselves, have emotional and economic stability, etc. before deciding that his time has come …
This is the case of Inma Soria, better known as @coohuco on social networks, and who, as she commented during the talk, has not yet considered being a mother, although she is clear that motherhood is something she wants to live in the future.
And this brings us to one of the social trends of recent years: the delay of motherhood. And, as María Pardo, director of Marie Claire and moderator of the day, explained, Spain is the second country in Europe that has delayed motherhood the most (beyond 40), behind Italy. «Today we have more consultations for people over 40 than under 35 years. Why? At 20 they are studying, working, seeking economic stability. Women consider it at 30 advanced, but it is a double-edged sword, “said Prof. Remohí.
In this sense, she announced: “Since 2007 we can stop time and thus help the duality that concerns women. The evolution of women and their biological clock are incompatible ”. And it is that, if the contraceptive pill was revolutionary in the 70s for managing to dissociate motherhood and sexual relations, the revolution of the 21st century is the preservation of fertility.
This is precisely what Irene Zabala, a patient at IVI Valencia, did at the beginning of the year. In anticipation that her work career will still take time to stabilize because she is preparing for a competitive examination, and knowing that she wants to be a mother, she froze her eggs. She explains: “For me, empowerment has played a decisive role in delaying motherhood. I decided to preserve my eggs so that I could focus on my career. ” Something that, according to Prof. Remohí, “will be the most normal because the woman will be able to decide when is her moment.
Hortensia Roig, president of EDEM, also wanted to give voice to the challenges of work-life balance: “Motherhood makes the journey difficult. It is much more difficult than studying, opposing or leading any project ”. This woman, who has achieved multiple successes in her working life, is also the mother of three children: “Being a mother and achieving work and personal balance is the hardest thing, but I would always repeat it.”
From here we want to take the opportunity to thank all attendees not only for their attention, but also for their participation in the subsequent question time. And it is that, for us, as Marián Garriga, Global Head of Marketing & Communications at IVI, said, women are at the center of our focus and therefore we want to contribute to the debate on the new roles of women, the new trends, motherhood in the XXI century.
In the coming months we will celebrate new conferences on Women and motherhood in the 21st century in other cities: if you are interested in attending, pay attention to our social networks!
