Knowing the diseases of babies
One of the things that most worries all mothers is knowing how to treat the most common diseases in babies. Sometimes, as much as we want to avoid it, it is impossible for the child not to suffer from any of these ills. In fact, some of these diseases are so common during the first year of life that they are almost part of the routine of caring for a baby.
Diarrhea
It is one of the common diseases in babies. It is defined as the watery stool with a frequency greater than three or more times a day. It is usually a symptom of a bacterial, viral or parasite infection. It is transmitted through contaminated food or water, or through poor hygiene.
Among the most common symptoms are:
- Pain in the abdomen
- Swelling
- Fever
- Constant need to go to the bathroom
- Dehydration
Influenza or flu
It is an infection of the upper respiratory tract (nose, bronchial tubes, lungs). This condition is very contagious since the virus is transmitted through coughing and sneezing. Handling of infected objects and subsequent contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth can also be spread.
Although each child may suffer from symptoms in different ways, they generally usually present:
- Fever of 39.4 to 40.5 º C (103 to 105 º F)
- Discomfort and pain in the body
- Stuffy nose or runny nose.
- Sore throat and headache
- Cough

Common cold
Colds are harmless, in fact the body can usually heal on its own. The symptoms are very similar to those of the flu, with the exception of not having a high fever. You can have slight aches and pains, without extreme fatigue or exhaustion.
On the other hand, the common cold usually lasts a week, its treatment does not require antibiotics.
Conjunctivitis
Also known as “pink eye”, it is a disease that causes redness of the white part of the eye. It can occur due to some bacterial or viral infection, and even due to allergic or chemical reactions.
The most common symptoms include:
- Secretions depending on the cause (green and thick, transparent and fluid)
- Burning and irritation in the eyes and itching
- Eyes glued in the morning
- Red or pink coloration in the eyes.
Bronchiolitis
Bronchiolitis is a disease that affects children under two years of age. It is an infection in the bronchioles, small branches of the bronchi. These small tubes are part of the airways, and are responsible for exchanging oxygen for carbon dioxide in the blood.
Symptoms of bronchiolitis include:
- Whistles
- Fever
- Cough
- Difficulty breathing
- Poor appetite
Remember, it is important to prevent the spread of microbes to protect the health of the little ones and even more, to know what to do in case of any signs of illness to avoid complications.
