Do vapers and electronic cigarettes affect fertility?

As every year, May 31 is World No Tobacco Day. A day dedicated to raising awareness about the negative effects of this habit on health. Among the many negative consequences we find infertility. If a year ago we talked about the relationship between tobacco and infertility, today we dedicate this article to talk about how vapers affect fertility.

What are vapers?

Vapers are devices that emerge as an alternative to traditional cigarettes. They consist of a liquid solution, known as vape liquid, which is inhaled as a vapor.

Relationship between vapers and infertility

Given the increase in the use of vapers and electronic cigarettes, the first studies on their impact on health are being carried out. Nicotine, as in ‘traditional’ tobacco, is the cause of this reduction in fertility.

Vaping and female fertility

In the case of female fertility, nicotine can interfere with ovulation, causing a decrease in ovulatory activity. But also in the implantation of the embryo, since by making it difficult to achieve pregnancy, the risk of infertility increases. But it also accelerates the loss of the eggs, and their quality is also affected. Also, for pregnant women who continue to vape, there is an increased risk of complications, such as preterm labor or low birth weight.

Vaping and male fertility

Nicotine, present in most vapers, is also known for its ability to reduce fertility in men. Specifically, it alters sperm production, affecting their quality and motility. It has also been found that nicotine exposure can alter sperm DNA and increase the risk of genetic mutations in offspring.

Other negative health consequences

Recent research reflects this impact, such as a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association in 2019, which showed that vaping significantly increased blood pressure, heart rate, and arterial stiffness in study participants. Another study, published in the medical journal JAMA Cardiology in 2018, found that regular users of electronic nicotine delivery devices had a higher risk of developing heart disease and stroke than non-users.

The vaper and the fertility of the youngest

Currently, the use of vapers has become more and more common among young people. In this sense, in addition to what was mentioned above about how vaping affects the fertility of both women and men, there are aspects to emphasize among the youngest. And it is that the antimüllerian hormone, in those cases of young girls interested in their fertility, is a value to control every year. Since, it should be remembered, both the quantity of oocytes and the quality decrease as age advances. And it is that the ovarian reserve is a factor that can be reduced as a result of nicotine, present both in vapers, normal or electronic cigarettes.

How tobacco affects fertility

As explained throughout the article, nicotine is one of the main elements present in tobacco that negatively affect fertility. From causing early menopause, given the aging it causes in smokers (active or passive); to other effects on fertility. Among them, the destruction of follicles, to a greater or lesser extent depending on the amount consumed.
