What is Wrinkle?
Wrinkles are folds of the skin that develop with permanent contraction of the facial muscles . These are more visible during the aging period due to changes in the skin layers.
The epidermis layer becomes thinner and the elasticity and collagen that provide moisture and firmness decreases. Hypodermis, the lowest layer of the skin, decreases as time passes .
Wrinkles are the most obvious sign of aging. However, they can also be seen, among other things, due to bad habits and sun exposure.
Different Types of Wrinkles
Clinically, wrinkles can be deep or very superficial . Superficial ones disappear when stretched back, this is how they differ from deep ones. Deep ones do not disappear when the skin is stretched. They appear the same, but the way they occur can vary .
Let’s examine the main types of wrinkles.
Static Wrinkles
These wrinkles are caused by the natural decrease of collagen, tissue and elasticity . You don’t need to do facial expressions to see them, they are already settled in your skin thanks to the repetition of the same movements of your face.
Dynamic Wrinkles
These are expression wrinkles. We create them by frowning, pouting, squinting and laughing. These are caused by muscle activity. Usually they tend to be seen after 3 years of age, some people use botulinum toxin as a preventive treatment .
The most popular dynamic wrinkles:
- The ” crow’s feet ” can be seen when you laugh, even when the face is at rest.
- Horizontal lines on the forehead
- Vertical streaks with frowning and pouting
Gravity Wrinkles
Gravity wrinkles occur as a result of the aging process. It is usually noticed around the age of 40. It manifests itself with aging, reduction in adipose (fatty) tissue, vascular degeneration and bone atrophy (atrophy).
These are marked by some factors:
- Highlighted dehydration
- The skin turns into a dry and hard structure
- Dermis layer losing light and tone
Over time, the face ages more due to the reduction of elastin and collagen in the skin. Expression wrinkles are emphasized and the skin sags due to gravity. Similarly, the loss of adipose (adipose tissue) tissue highlights certain bone areas of the face and highlights signs of aging .
The most common areas of this are as follows:
- Neck
- Sides of the chin
- Front of the ears
Wrinkles due to gravity are formed due to aging of the skin. It often occurs after the age of 40.
Mixed Wrinkles
These can be caused by many factors, such as aging, prolonged sun exposure , gravity and facial movements. These are vertical wrinkles in the mouth, nose edges and front of the neck.
Sleep Wrinkles
Sleep also affects premature aging .
It differs according to the dynamics in its shape. These lines are seen vertically on the neck, face and neck line. These typically occur after the age of 30, when the natural production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid in the body is reduced.

Richard Glogau’s Classification for Different Types of Wrinkles
There is another system for differentiating wrinkle types. This system has been extended by leather expert Richard Glogau. This system classifies wrinkles into four different categories according to the photoaging angle of the skin .
- TYPE I: No Wrinkles: This condition is usually seen in people between the ages of 20 and 30. It is characterized by mild premature aging, moderate pigment changes , minimal wrinkles and no keratosis (hardening, calluses). There is no need for makeup to hide.
- TYPE II: Expression Wrinkles: These are seen in people between the ages of 30 and 40. Slight premature aging, blemishes and hardening (but not visible) are encountered. Expression wrinkles are especially visible around the eyes when you laugh. Sometimes, makeup is needed to hide it .
- TYPE III. Seated Wrinkle: These are seen in people between the ages of 50 and 60. Advanced aging, prominent spots , telangiectasias and visible keratoses (hardening) and even pronounced wrinkles on your face even if you do not make a statement. They cannot be completely hidden by wearing makeup.
- TYPE IV: Wrinkle Only: These are seen in people over 60 years old. Severe aging, yellowish gray skin color, premalignant lesions, and wrinkles all over the face. You cannot wear makeup as there are cracks and crevices.
What to Remember About the Different Types of Wrinkles
Not all wrinkle types occur due to aging. Some may appear earlier due to overexposure to the sun or facial expressions. Having healthy lifestyle habits and a beauty routine is very important to slow down this image.
