Caffeine Nausea

Although a favorite to start the day, coffee can cause digestive discomfort. The most common effect after drinking coffee is caffeine nausea.

Cause of Nausea After Drinking Coffee

Nausea after drinking coffee is often associated with caffeine and stomach acid. Caffeine is a natural compound in coffee that stimulates the work of the brain and nervous system. This compound keeps you vigorous after drinking coffee.

  • Caffeine Triggers Gastric Acid Production

In addition to stimulating the brain and nerves, caffeine also increases the digestive system and stomach acid production. Increased stomach acid can irritate the stomach lining and esophagus, causing caffeine nausea and heartburn. These symptoms are usually worse if you drink coffee on an empty stomach. The reason is that there is no food in the stomach that can protect the stomach lining from destructive acids.

  • You are more sensitive to caffeine

It can cause caffeine nausea after drinking coffee because the body is sensitive to caffeine. Caffeine sensitivity is associated with your genetic condition.

  • You have caffeine withdrawal symptoms

If you have a caffeine addiction in your body, you may experience withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop drinking coffee. Caffeine withdrawal symptoms include headache, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. This can also cause stress, irritability, tremors and caffeine nausea after trying to drink coffee again. These symptoms can last 12–24 hours after you stop drinking coffee.

How Does Nausea Goes After Drinking Coffee?

There are a few tips to overcome caffeine nausea and prevent it from reappearing. These are:

  • Do not drink coffee on an empty stomach

Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can make nausea worse. Solid foods such as eggs, bananas, or oatmeal can help you overcome caffeine nausea by neutralizing excess stomach acid.

  • Alternatively, drink decaffeinated coffee

Try replacing your drink with decaf coffee for two weeks. Decaf coffee contains less caffeine. Caffeine may not trigger the same nausea after drinking regular coffee. You can try herbal teas.

  • Eat foods that neutralize stomach acid

Coffee is acidic, so you need to neutralize it with alkaline or very water-containing foods. Try nuts, vegetables, and fruits. You can also drink herbal tea or have a broth soup.

  • Drinking water

Coffee stimulates water release from your body. This drink is also acidic for the stomach. Drinking water can help neutralize stomach acid and regain body fluids lost.

Caffeine Nausea is one of the few digestive disorders that occur after drinking coffee. This condition is caused by an increase in stomach acid due to caffeine. The key to overcoming it is to drink coffee on an empty stomach and not consume anything that neutralizes stomach acid.

However, if nausea always comes on and worsens, perhaps you are better off not consuming coffee. You can try alternatives such as decaf coffee, fruit tea or herbal drinks.
