Homoparental families grow by almost 80% in the last year

Fortunately, families made up of two mothers are becoming more and more frequent in our society. We find them at school, in the park… And in Spain we have one of the most open and tolerant LGTBI+ legislations regarding homoparental families. These advances, together with Assisted Reproduction techniques, motivate this increase and the consolidation of this kind of families.

Increase in homoparental families in recent years

On the occasion of the celebration of the International LGTBI+ Pride Day, we want to take stock of what female partners mean to our patients. In the last 5 years we have seen the number of homosexual women who come to IVI for treatment multiply by 3. In addition, only in the last year the figure grows to 78%. Without a doubt, it is a true reflection of the importance that Assisted Reproduction techniques have for these women to make their desire to start a family come true.

“Couples of women come to consultation with very clear ideas and have been thinking for some time that they want to start a family. Thanks to the normalization of homoparental couples, in recent years we have witnessed an exponential increase in these patients. In the specific case of IVI, in the last year alone, treatments for female partners have increased by 78%. This fact, of course, motivates us every day to continue contributing to this positive social change”explains Dr. Antonio Requena, medical director of IVI.

Types of treatments for couples of women

Assuming that homosexual women will always need a sperm donor to undergo reproductive medicine treatment, there are different options available to them. The choice of one or the other lies mainly in the age and fertility status of both women. The different treatments that they can resort to are, mainly, artificial insemination, conventional in vitro fertilization or the ROPA method. The latter is the ideal option for female couples, since it allows both to enjoy the process equally.

“The ROPA method has gained strength in recent years, since it allows the two women who make up the couple to actively share the in vitro fertilization process. One of them will offer the oocytes and the other her uterus, where she will gestate the embryo generated with the fertilized oocyte of her partner”says Dr. Requena.

IVI clinics with the highest growth in homoparental families

If we analyze the data that we have mentioned above geographically, the three cities that stand out in growth of these treatments in the last two years are Almería, Málaga and Las Palmas. These, followed by the Balearic Islands, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Murcia and Bilbao.

“Our priority objective is to help women realize their desire to be mothers, regardless of their sexual condition. Today’s families are diverse, as is society in general. Science must adapt to this reality and put at their disposal the necessary tools to help them on their way to motherhood. At IVI we have been aware of this evolution for years, which is why we work to offer the best solutions to our patients, the fundamental driving force behind our activity. The group of women’s couples represents an increasingly important part of our day to day life, to which is added the growing number of foreign women who come to our country to make their reproductive desire come true, both for the quality of our professionals and for the a more advanced legal framework than that of their countries of origin”concludes Dr. Requena.
