Testimony of a patient who has preserved her fertility

We talked hundreds of times about the path to motherhood. Of the treatment, the difficulties, the joys… But there are times when that path begins years before. And we know that with the help of science many dreams come true, right? But in other cases, innovation in reproductive medicine offers a tool for planning motherhood. So that, although now is not the time, you do not have to give up your desire.

This is the case of Sara, who made the decision to preserve fertility at IVI Zaragoza with Dr. Elisa Gil. Among others, her motivation to do so was seeing how two very important people for her encountered hundreds of obstacles in order to have a child.

Sara is one of the almost 11,000 patients who have preserved their fertility at IVI clinics, for social reasons. She wanted to share an emotional letter with all of us, telling us about her journey. Today she is about to embark on a journey, one of the most important experiences of her life. But she does it quietly because she has preserved her fertility.

Fertility preservation: where do I start?

This is a letter for all those who are doubting about the egg vitrification. Or about postponing your motherhood:

My name is Sara and I wanted to share my story with you. Why I decided to vitrify my oocytes, at the age of 30. And I think that this is a decision that I will never regret.

Looking back… He had enough reasons to carry out this process. But even so, it took me a while to take that first step. There was always some excuse. It is normal to have many doubts at first. It may be difficult for us to find on the internet all the information we want to search for. Or we don’t know anyone who has been through it. Or we don’t know who to ask… I found myself in that situation at first. So where do I have to start?

The power of planning motherhood

In my particular case, two important things had to happen in my life and in my environment for me to finally take the step at that precise moment. First, he had close relatives wanting to be parents at an advanced age. They recently gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby girl. But they went through enough difficulties to get there. She, knowing me better than myself, spoke to me and advised me on vitrification on several occasions. To prevent me, in the future, from having to go through the complexity that they have gone through.

Second, because I was at a time of change in my professional life. I left my job behind to bet everything on a project, on a personal journey. No destination or fixed times.

In addition, it was clear to me that at least in the next five years I was not going to be a mother. The following years were going to be dedicated ‘to myself’. To continue learning, to explore the world, to grow on a personal level and also on a professional level. To do those things that, if I don’t do them at some point, I know with great certainty that I will regret it.

Do not give up the dream of being a mother

Nor was it very clear if one day I was going to be a mother, if I was going to want to be. It is still too early to answer that question. She neither had nor do I have a partner.

But, if one day it were to be, let it be because I want to; because she and I want. Because that time has come and because we decided so. Not because of the pressure of the passage of time, because of the biological clock or because of social conventions.

All these reasons pushed me to take that first step, which cost me so much to start. From there, I went directly to IVI. Thanks to the recommendation of the close relatives that I have mentioned previously.

Stop the time

Overall my experience with IVI Zaragoza it was quite positive. In my case, it was the Dr. Elisa Gil who treated me and accompanied me from start to finish. To whom I thank for the patience he had in solving all my doubts. And the closeness of him in the deal, which made this whole process comfortable and much more bearable. Without a doubt, I recommend it.

Lastly, I would tell you –as a personal recommendation- that, if at any time you have felt identified with this letter or you are doubting, do not leave it for later. That time passes quickly. Ask, inform yourselves… You are not going to lose anything for it. Moreover, quite the opposite. Ask any questions you may have. Before, during and after. And count on the support of your gynecologist and your clinic, which will not be lacking.

Without the pressure of the passage of time

It seems like this was a long time ago, but it’s only been a few months since I went on that first date. full of doubts And now, about to start my journey, I feel much calmer. Without the pressure of time, which had been loading for a few years. Somehow, I feel empowered. Knowing that I have made the right decision. That Sara, in 10 years, will appreciate it enormously.

Many thanks to my close relatives, who warned me about it at a key moment. To the IVI Zaragoza team and especially to Dr. Elisa Gil, for accompanying me throughout the process and for conveying the confidence that I was and that I am in good hands.

To you, who may be reading this, I hope I have been able to help you a little in your next steps.
