Testimony of a mother for assisted reproduction after cancer

We say, on many occasions, that science and love create families. In our clinics we see thousands of cases, of stories… Each one of you arrives having walked her own path, which at times has been the hardest. Today, February 4, is International Cancer Day. A word that is uncomfortable, that scares… But at IVI we want to bring light and hope. Or better yet, it is going to be done, through a letter, by a patient from IVI Zaragoza who, after overcoming the disease, became a mother. Because yes, there is a way beyond cancer. And, above all, there is life.

Thanks to Dr. Elisa Gil, from IVI Zaragoza, and IVI’s free oncology preservation program, she achieved her dream of being a mother and celebrating life.

Motherhood is sometimes a miracle of science

Dear Elisa:

Mentally I will have already written you at least eight emails, which are the months that my little Carmen already has. My miracle baby.

She is a beautiful, smiling, energetic and sociable girl, who has me in love with her desire to explore the world. I have so much fun with it, even though I end up exhausted every day. Being a single mother is hard, but being her mom is a privilege.

For me, being able to experience motherhood is a miracle. A miracle of science, in whose application you, my doctor, have a lot to do; and a miracle of perseverance, illusion and faith (you have to believe that you can).

I will always be grateful to you for all those tests that seemed like barriers along the way to me, but which turned out to be essential to ensure, as far as possible, the success of the implementation. Remember that only one healthy embryo remained from the entire process. And, of course, it had to be her.

As you told me, you have to be patient and let yourself be guided.

I have resumed my cancer medication, as we agreed with my oncologist, Dr. Antón. As you know, thanks to him informing me of the possibility of oocyte preservation treatment before chemo, I was able to embark on this great adventure. All my revisions continue to come out fine. Now it’s my turn to keep up my end of the deal.

Thank you for helping to create families, to create love. My life, and that of all the people around me, is much better since my precious daughter was born.

Infinite thanks to…

  • To Dr. Antonio Antón, head of the Oncology Service at the Miguel Servet University Hospital in Zaragoza, for his knowledge and humanity.
  • To Carmen, the nurse of the breast process, guide and companion of invaluable help in this arduous path that many of us face.
  • To Dr. Elisa Gil, from the IVI Zaragoza clinic, for her ability to listen and make decisions. Because of her tremendous empathy.
  • To my family, for always being there, despite the protective fears.
  • To my friends and friends, for sharing emotions and respecting my decision.
  • To my daughter Carmen, for existing.

Let’s celebrate Life, living it.

CMS, mom thanks to IVI Zaragoza

The importance of cancer preservation

At IVI we claim the importance of informing patients diagnosed with cancer of the impact that treatments can have on fertility. This testimony is a clear example of this, that with information and prevention there is life after cancer. For this reason and because, although life comes to a standstill when the diagnosis is received, there are many reasons to fight to overcome the disease. And from IVI we contribute our grain of sand with the free fertility preservation program for oncological reasons. Created in 2007, under the names “Being a mother after cancer” and “Being a father after cancer” in these 15 years almost 1,500 women have taken advantage of this type of preserve.

You, the most important thing for IVI

If you liked this letter, its story… If you have been moved by this lesson of life and overcoming, if you identify with something… We want to encourage you to share your testimony, because in this way you will help other women who are faced with the decision to put themselves in the hands of assisted reproduction to be mothers. You can tell us your story through the mail social@beimpe.com
