Most natural therapies consider the personality of the patient and their state of mind as a very important element for the diagnosis. (Bach flowers, Homeopathy, Shiatsu …) For example, Dr. Bach said that the person (personality) should be treated and not the disease. Therefore, the more information we have about the person, the more accurate the diagnosis will be.
Many aspects of the personality, we will be able to appreciate them with the naked eye throughout the interview, but there will be other deeper ones, which will cost us more to reach.
And either as a complement to the therapist’s interview, to get to know (and therefore better understand) our friends, to select suitable candidates for a job, to analyze compatibility between couples, etc. there is a technique called graphology that can help us, even to know ourselves a little better.
Let’s imagine that we are sitting on a terrace of a cafe from where we can observe people as they pass by on the sidewalk of the street. And we try to describe the personality of the people we see passing by. What will we look at? If we see a person with curved shapes, moving little by little and with grace, we will think that they are sweet and feminine.
On the other hand, if we see a person more angular, walking quickly, leaning forward, we will think that he is rather aggressive and active. We will be based on the gestures that the person makes to classify it. And it is easy to imagine that these gestures that the person makes when moving also repeats them when writing. And these are the ones that we can interpret through graphology.
Writing is considered another form of gesturing. And these graphic gestures are structured in eight large groups:
Letter size: that speaks to us of the self-concept. Self-confidence, which can be real or figurative.
Shape: It tells us about the lifestyle. Individual culture, originality of thought, tastes, madness …
Direction of the lines: it tells us about the state of mind. Humor, rectitude, flexibility, ambition, activity, optimism, pessimism, fatigue.
Velocity: It tells us about the rhythm of intellectual processes and physical activity. Precipitation, slowness.
Pressure exerted on paper when writing: It tells us about vitality, sensuality, firmness, illness.
Letter inclination: it tells us about feelings. Affection, coldness, shyness, passion, sensitivity.
Cohesion of the letters between them: It tells us about how we carry out our mental processes, basically if we reach conclusions through a logical-deductive procedure or if we let ourselves be carried away more by instincts. It also tells us about sincerity, falsehood, extravagance, excitement.
General order of occupation of the paper on which it is written: it tells us about the capacity for organization, the clarity or confusion of ideas, how we address others.
The analysis of the text is clearly different from that of the signature. This difference is very important, since in the text we find the social image that the person gives and in the signature we find how they really feel inside. These contrasts are usually the most useful for the therapist and for the analysis of the person in general.
For example, if we want to interpret the level of sadness or melancholy that the person feels, we will see that the direction of the lines of the text will be descending, but if we observe that the signature is horizontal or even slightly ascending, we will deduce that the level of sadness only it is superficial or temporary. On the other hand, if we observe that the signature is also descending, we will deduce that the thing is deeper.
Another very important rule is to observe the entire set of the entire writing before making judgments. Analyze the amount and intensity in which a graphic expression appears. For example, if we see unnecessary angles, we will say that the person has a point of aggressiveness, hardness and activity. But it is not the same if a single 70º angle appears throughout the writing, as if two 15º angles appear on each line.
Another complementary method is called inductive. Each isolated sign has its own meaning. For example:
The capital letter “A” tells us about the harmony of the person with respect to the intimate-family and social-professional environments.
The capital letter “D” speaks to us, in the case of young people, of their relationship with their parents, and in the case of adults, also if it has not yet been overcome and in addition to future projects.
The lowercase letter “t” tells us if we like to send or to be sent.
The lowercase letter “g” is called the letter of sexuality as a couple.
The small “y” tells us about sensuality with oneself. How I enjoy my own body.
As we can see, without being able to go into more detail now, we can, with a superficial analysis of the writing, describe a kind of caricature of the analyzed character, and with a deeper analysis, refine the definition much more. And we will often get surprises … The good or bad use made of this information would already be a topic for another story, but in general it is said that knowing is estimating, and if graphology helps us to know better.

From the well-known saying Tell me who you are with and I will tell you who you are, here we could say Tell me how you write and I will tell you who you are, how you are, etc.
