Tell me who you hang out with and I’ll tell you who you are, ‘says the popular proverb to explain how the choice of friends and close people determines the way of being of each one and, ultimately, their way of facing life. For better or for worse, feedback from trusted people is something that is not in doubt, which should be taken into account when deepening some friendships or discriminating against others.
As an ideal personality cannot be defined for friendships because it will depend on the different needs and concerns of each one, below we propose seven types of people that should be avoided for exerting a negative influence, according to business leadership specialist Jeff Haden:
Pessimists who are back from everything
These types of people often speak from the perspective of their bad experiences, continually forecasting a black future in which there is no room for change no matter how hard one tries. Although pessimists disenchanted with everything strive to justify their attitudes by giving the feeling that they are the voice of reason, they are only people who have failed. This leads them to think that if they have not been able to achieve a certain goal, others will not be able to either or, what is worse, they will not help them.
Optimists excited about everything
It is about a typology of people completely opposite to those previously described. For them, each and every one of the ideas or initiatives that are undertaken are incredible and are called to achieve certain success. This continuous and uncritical rally can improve the ego, but it has the danger of making us make mistakes or minimizing the possible threats of, for example, a business project. The easiest attitude is precisely that of friends, who find everything fine and do not put ‘buts’ in any way to help us avoid mistakes or improve an idea.
Gossips
In all circles of friends there are people who spend their lives telling gossip or unpleasant details about others. Although few are those who resist listening to the latest gossip about third parties, they should be aware that at any moment they themselves will be the protagonists of the gossip. A good friend should be the one with whom you share thoughts and feelings with the assurance that you will not rush to tell the first one you meet the scoop.
Egocentric
People who believe that everything revolves around them can hardly be altruistic or in solidarity with others. Their personal interest will always go ahead of everything and, in most cases, it will not cost them to pass over their own friends if they are able to achieve what they are looking for. By seeking to become the main center of attention at all times, it will be difficult to maintain a relationship of equality and trust with them.
Interested
Friendships or partners are not a business relationship so disinterest should be one of its main traits. For these people, relationships are an end in themselves, so when they believe that they have not come to their aid, they will feel disappointed at the first change. However, even if they have no reason to do so, they will not reciprocate when needed.
Resigned
There is a series of people without any ambition who, over time, end up turning into robots that day after day and year after year repeat the same tasks without any objective or goal. Their influence will end up demotivating us. The most profitable thing is to surround yourself with ambitious people, with clear ideas and great goals to conquer. Even if their life goals differ from yours, it will always be good to have these types of people around to soak up the energy they give off.
Defeatist Aggressors
These people have the uncanny ability to see troublesome consequences in whatever is said or done. They constantly make negative judgments when asked for an opinion, usually poorly reasoned or implausible, so their help will be of little use. Rather than arguing his doubts about something, his claims are presented as inevitable prophecies, something that actually has to do with his fear of change.
